LCRD welcomes adults 18 and older. New Skater Orientation is a relaxed introduction to the league, equipment, training program, and all the questions that come with trying something wonderfully new. LCRD affectionately calls its new skaters the Not Yetis, because nobody is expected to arrive derby-ready.

Review your progress with coaches after training. Some skaters move forward, while others repeat the starter course for more time and confidence.

Do I need to know how to skate?
No. Coaches begin with balance, stopping, safe falls, and getting comfortable on quad skates.
When can I start?
LCRD generally holds one or two New Skater Orientation sessions each year. If no session is currently listed, contact the league so you can hear about the next opportunity.
What will it cost?
The current 12-week new skater training program costs $100. If you continue afterward, regular league dues are $50 per month. LCRD will confirm current costs before you commit. If cost is a barrier, ask privately whether assistance or payment arrangements are available.
What gear will I need?
You will eventually need quad skates, a helmet, knee and elbow pads, wrist guards, and a mouthguard. Loaner gear may be available while you learn, and coaches can help you understand fit before you buy your own equipment.
When and where are practices?
Practice times and locations vary with venue availability. LCRD reviews the current schedule and attendance expectations at orientation.
What if I want to skate without full contact?
Talk with the coaches about your goals. Skating officials are an important part of derby and offer another way to develop skating skills without playing full contact.
What if I already play roller derby?
Experienced transfer skaters are welcome. Contact LCRD to discuss practices, assessment, and team placement.
